I was just wonderin if anyone on here has ever had thier horses TMJ joint injected?
We've had Cash worked on a couple times, and at this point he's worse now than he was before we started workin on him. I'm really wonderin, since he seemed so much better after the accupuncture and adjustments. If now that it had gotten better, and he was "relieved" and now it's hurtin again, so he's just acting worse because it was feelin better. Did that make any sense.
We talked about injecting the joint, but wanted to try the accupuncture and adjusting first. I've read alot about it, and most times it's a one time injection and you don't hafta do it again and again, like you do hocks.
Just wonderin if anyone has had any experience havin this done and the results they got from doing it.

Nope dont know!!
But I have TMJ and it is the worst pain!! It hit me yesterday bad. Had me crying at work.
Going to doctor Monday for it and getting a new night guard so I'll quit locking and gridding my teeth!!
Hope he isok!

I too have TMJ, but I worked as a dental assistant for 8 years, and it was my job to make those night guards. Basically the same thing as the football mouth pieces that you put in boiling water, then put them in your mouth and form to the shape of your teeth. So I started doin that instead of spending outrageous amounts on the one's made at the office. Works great. And they don't cost but about 6 bucks at walmart.
Haha wish I could make a mouth guard for the horse, but it doesn't work that way.....
-
Dang well My insurance covers the whole thing so dont much worry!! Id hate to pay out right for one!! They are around 400 from my doctor!!
-
Yeah I know....it's rediculously high for what you get. And they are so easy to make.
-
No one's had a horse with TMJ???
-
Nope, dont have one...but wish they would inject my TMJ !!! Mine is so bad that the specialist flat told me there was nothing he could do cause both sides were "GONE"....Sigh
-
Ya know Id never heard of it til Igot told I had it so its nice to know Im not the only with a screwed up jaw!!
-
I can't believe no one has delt with this in a horse. After all the readin I've done on the subject and how common it sounds like it is......
-
I guess I have never had one adjusted enough to establish a problem? i mean to say he has a problem. I know that Gabe has to have his teeth done a lot.....by the dentist. But I cant afford adjustments right now and the last chiro did not mess with his jaw? However, I do know that my chiro adjusts my jaw and the more he does, the more I need it.
-
TMJ from what I can gather thru my reading, either starts with an injury to the jaw itself......or is cause by lack of proper dental care. It's not caused by adjusting. We got this horse as a 9 year old. And the first time we had his teeth done, was by a regular vet......basically did nothing for him. Then when we finally got him done by a true equine dentist.....omg his teeth were horrible!!!!!! to the point that he had lacerations on his cheeks and his tongue. After having his teeth done now every six months for a year and ahalf....we can tell some improvements right after his teeth are done, but then about 3 mo afterwards, he gets the bad tmj thing goin on again. Which in turn causes all sorts of other stuff to be sore. Anywhere from his head to his back feet. It can make them literally be balled up and sore in places you'd never dream of.
So I'm hoping by getting the joint injected......that hopefully we can get him some relief in the tmj joint...therefore maybe help with all the other areas that are sore.

Well that makes sense. I know I hurt from head to toe from my stupid Jaw...

I have had it done to my horse, call me or when I see you next I can explain.

The vet told me that this TMJ in horses is not something a vet would normally look at because it shows in the hocks and everywhere else that the horse would be considered lame. Anyways a they take a few exrays to diagnosis.
I would like more info on this subject also. Where did you find all the information about it?
Thanks
-
After diagnosing the horse with it, of course I came home and read everything I could find online.......As well as watched as many video's on Youtube as I could find on massagin TMJ.....accupuncture of it...... I didn't save links to it...but I did print out an article about TMJ pain that points to the Hyoid Muscles as the source. I have no idea right now if this has anything to do with what my horse is goin thru, but I'm taking the article with me to the vet to ask him about it.
City...when's a good time to call you?...I'd really like your input before my trip to the vet tomorrow.

Thank you Thank you Thank you Citygonecountry!!!! I so enjoyed visitin with you on the phone. And I appreciate you sharing your experience with your horse's TMJ issue.

I had alot of TMJ problems when I was younger (and had a retard EX-husband)... once he was gone, so was the gritting of teeth at night. Miraculous recovery.
All kidding aside.. I did use a dentist made mouth guard and then a standard one used for sports. I have even had people buy the ones for bull riders that we carry in the store for that purpose.

Trip to the vet today......they ultrasounded his TMJ joints, and found inflammation on the right side (first barrel, to the right where he's havin issues).....left side showed clean. He injected the right joint. Also done chiro work on him, and some accupuncture. Can't make a practice run til Sunday. He said to ride him, but no barrel work till then.
So ya'll keep your fingers crossed that this is the solution to his problem.

Ok she rode him today (friday). Just out in the pasture trottin some big circles and some big figure eights. Nice and slow and he did just great. Licked and chewed most of the time while she was ridin him. After she was done, she sat there on him, talkin to me, and I asked her to see if he would flex any. He's NEVER flexed before while she's on him. He flexed on both sides....she worked with him a lil bit on it...and before she was done he was flexin to the stirrup. With no resistance. Came back to the house, unsaddled, and stretched him really good with treats.
-
Yeah that is great.
I am so glad that he is feeling better and everything. Please continue to keep us posted.
;D ;) :)
