I am currently having problems with my 7yr old gelding. He was hauled and exhibitioned last year, and is being hauled to bigger rodeos and being asked to run this year. He acts wonderful at the gate, and turns all three barrels amazingly. The problem is, on the way to the second barrel, he almost always zigs and zags, acting like he is confused about which side to go to. In my last two runs, he has successfully ducked to the wrong side of the second barrel. The thing that is interesting, is that he still turns like there is a barrel there and then tries to run hard to third and continue with the pattern. I don't get it. He is not sore, arena sour, and can see fine, as I dont have this problem with the third. He does not do this at home, and I have got the chance to ride in the arena previous to every rodeo I have been to. I always make him lope to the fence and stop when warming up in the arena, as well as exaggerating getting him over after the first barrel. Last time he ducked, I happened to be up in slack so I got the chance to get back in the arena, get after him, and make another run, in which he did great. He has a very light mouth. Any suggestions for exercises, possible reasons, or bit help would be great!

Thanks!!

From what you are telling me in your email I would have to think that you
are not being active enough as a rider and leader in going from the 1st to
the 2nd barrel.  You say your horse almost always "zigs and zags" acting
like he is confused about where to go.  Are YOU giving him definite
directions?  You need to get up and ride to a point on the ground about 3-4
ft to the right side of the 2nd barrel, balancing your horse with both hands
on the reins and your body in a forward position. Chances are you and your
horse are both anticipating the turn way too much!
