I have a mare who kicks in the trailer the whole time that it is moving i am afraid that she will hurt herself is there any way too fix it without hobbles she seems to be somewhat claustraphobic already and always gets nervous in tight spaces i need some help she is kicking hard enough to put dents in my trailer without shoes on thanks, brooke
Brooke...In my opinion, there's really not a way to fix a horse that is already at that point except to hobble them...for your safety, her safety and to keep your trailer investment from being a ruined mess.
If you show her that she can't kick and bang the sides out of your trailer with a set of hobbles, she might stop for a while...but normally, once that starts...its something you have to live with.
If she has not always been this way...and this is a recent issue...then i would really think long and hard about anything that could have started this...bad stop once, a horse she hauled with that wasn't good, anything like that...and also look at a couple things like "is this trailer large enough for her"...what do you haul her in...is it a side by side, a slant, a stock/combo?? To some horses, that makes all the difference as well. Go over her physically with a fine tooth comb to also make sure that her stifles aren't hurting her as well...I have one that will kick the trailer if his stifles are sore.
Let me know how this turns out!! :)
