hi I have a 4 year old bay quarter horse gelding that is broke and I am training him on barrels, I have took lessons and raced on different
horses and I want to know how you teach your horse to check I think is
what you call it , when you go to a barrel and you check before you go
to make your pocket if that makes any since, thanks

kaykay

You can do one of two things: each time you come to your rate point, slow your horse or collect his stride - if you are trotting, walk at the rate point; if you are loping, trot at the rate point. If you have a horse that wants to charge the barrel when you ask him to collect, then you can actually stop him at the rate point, back up two or three steps and sit until he relaxes and stands quietly.
