Ebarrelracing.com rocks

« on: May 22, 2006, 05:06:37 PM »

I have a well broke 8 yr old gelding that we are still training to run barrels. When I approach the 1st barrel his body is in a nice arc to make the turn, but as he is coming around the back side of the barrel he is anticipating my next move and attempts to turn the barrel again.  I have tried putting my outside leg into him to tell him not to make that turn and to move on to the 2nd barrel, but at this stage it is just getting worse. I am wondering if I did too many circles and loops around the pattern. If so, how do I fix this problem? Thanks!!

Hi...I would say that you have your horse too tucked up at the poll going into
the turn on the front side of the barrel.  He is trying to be responsive and you
need to use less inside going into the actual pocket before the turn and take
your outside rein for awhile to straighten his nose up alittle bit.  Use your outside
rein to drive his rear back underneath him to send him forward.  The most tuck
you need on any barrel horse in my opinion is to only be able to see the corner
of their eye and the tip of their nose going into the turn....if you have more than
that, its too much.
Thanks for your question!!
