Blazin’ Barrels Winter Buckle Series Ends With A Bang!

COLO. SPRING, Colo. (March 13, 2005) – March 12-13 represented an explosive weekend of non-stop barrel racing action as competitors from across the Rocky Mountain region and beyond vied for handsome prizes and substantial cash rewards during the grand finale of the Blazin’ Barrels Winter Buckle Series. Set beneath the magnificent backdrop of Pikes Peak, the Blazin’ Barrels Winter Buckle Series drew contestants from Colorado, as well as Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas and Wyoming through the course of the series, which paid out $27,938 in cold hard cash and an additional $5,000 in awards. As the popular series wrapped up in March, $9,220 was paid out during the final weekend, which took place at the Norris Penrose Equestrian Center Indoor Arena. The 2004-2005 Blazin’ Barrels Winter Buckle Series consisted of eight races which took place October 16-17, November 13-14, January 15-16 and March 12-13.

No strangers to the winner’s circle, it was the dynamic duo of Karen Turek and trusty partner Shootin’ Breeze, who dominated the Open 4D on Saturday posting a 15.299 and the fast-time of the weekend. Turek captured top honors in both Saturday’s WPRA Divisional Tour and 119 entry Open 4-D, as well as earning sixth place money in the 1D on her second horse, Major Bully. Turek earned $598 for her efforts on Saturday. Rounding out the top three in the Open 1D on Saturday were Deb Christy and The Chocolate Dash, winning second with a 15.332, and Priscilla Medina posting a 15.366 aboard Do I Bug for third. Christy finished second in Saturday’s WPRA approved DT, while Medina split third and fourth place honors in the DT with Heather Ratterree riding Major Drag.

Sunday’s action presented a similar scenario with one barrel racer dominating both the WPRA DT and Open 4-D fields. This time it was veteran barrel racer Laura Lambert of Colorado Springs who jockeyed her stallion, Doc’s Genuine Stryker, to a 15.509 for first place in both the 1D and the WPRA DT races for total earnings of $488. Jessi Peek and Ryon’s Tiny Truckle posted a 15.659 racing to the second place finish in 4D action, while Mackenzie Scott piloted Deets to a time of 15.664, which was good enough for third.

Incidentally, it was Peek, who hails from Trinidad, Colo., who dominated the Blazin’ Barrel Winter Series 1D field, securing the championship by a one point margin over Nicole McKnight and her trusty mount, Trux. Finishing third over all for the series awards was Linda Aaberg aboard her bay bombshell, Nuthins Too Special, a.k.a. Foghorn. Beautiful Bob Berg championship belt buckles were presented to the series champions in each division. The 1D championship buckle was awarded courtesy of Vic Keeton and Hitchin' Post Trailer Sales. McKnight received a Pro Rodeo Original cowhide briefcase bag for her efforts, courtesy of Meek's Rhinestone Ranch. In addition to the prestigious Blazin’ Barrels Winter Series Bob Berg Buckles, other fabulous series awards included Western Horseman signed and numbered prints, cowhide brief bags, Wrangler gift certificates, Farnam products and Cowboy Magic products.

Running away with the Open 2D Championship Bob Berg Buckle, sponsored by Rocky Mountain Barns, was Kathy Gannon. In yet another hard fought win, Gannon secured the 2D title by one point over Gabrielle Larson in second. Deb Frasier rounded out the top three in the series. The 3D Bob Berg Championship Buckle, sponsored by First National Bank of Las Animas, La Junta and Monument, was awarded to Shelby Frasier. Taking home the second place awards in the Open 3D series-end standings was Deb Schroetlin, while Jeannie Turner captured third place honors. Topping the 4D Bob Berg Championship Buckle standings was Robin Cole. The 4D buckle was sponsored by Midnight Rose Hotel and Casino in Cripple Creek, Colo. Samantha McKnight took home the second place 4D prizes, followed in third by Penny Chivers, winner of the third place treats.

De Chapman and Bill Jenks were each winners of Justin Boot Certificates, compliments of the western boot icon now celebrating over 125 year of business! Justin Boot Company has graciously donated two pair of boots to be given away at each series race.

The following sponsors enable TNT events to continually award fantastic prizes as well as added prize money. Presenting Sponsors for the series include Hitchin' Post Trailer Sales, Rocky Mountain Barns, First National Bank of Las Animas, La Junta and Monument, The Midnight Rose Hotel and Casino, and Meek's Rhinestone Ranch. Aut viam inveniam aut faciam - I will either find a way or make one.  "Can't lives on Won't street."

Let us be reminded of what Captain John Parker told his army at Lexington Green, the place where the War for Independence began in 1775. He said, “Stand your ground. Don’t fire unless fired upon, but if they mean to have a war, let it begin here.
