Franis Dearborn

Where are you from? I was born in a small town in S. Calif., moved to Texas when I was 22, lived there until 6 years ago and currently reside in the boonies S. W. of Hugo, Oklahoma.

When did you start barrel racing? Started barrel racing in 1998

Are you involved in any other equine events? Not at the present

Who or What got you started barrel racing? My oldest daughter Lisa Downs aka bad lisa or Itdash

On the road things sometimes happen. Do you have an unusual or funny story?  The one that comes to mind was youngest daughter Stephanie and I were on our way to a barrel race when we had a blow out on the trailer, we were on the side of the road that was also in a dip in the road. Lisa and Sheryl Hammonds were running together that day, Lisa was driving her rig and when they topped the hill and could see us on the side of the road Lisa inquires, wonder if that is any one we know, where upon Sheryl answers “only your mamma”

What was the name of your favorite horse and tell us a little about it. Hope Runs Deep, is an off the track thoroughbred I got him when he was 4 and he is now 17. He is just absolutely the kindest horse you have ever met, I have no qualms at all at putting a child on this horse and letting them go. He is the best baby sitter there ever was.

What are some of the events that you have won (or races that stand out in your mind)? Geeezzzzz, I loved every one I have gone to.

Over the years have you noticed any changes in barrel racing what are the good or bad you’ve seen? I guess the major improvements I have seen is the way the races are run, more professional and smoothly run.

What is do you think of an equal pay out 4d? Boy Bob, you are really wanting to get me flamed here, lol, I have always been a strong advocate of equal pay out for all the usual reasons.

Do you think of yourself as a professional barrel racer? By no stretch of the imagination.

If your not a professional barrel racer what do you do for a living? I am retired, have had a good many interesting jobs in my lifetime.

Who is your favorite barrel racer or barrel racers? Deb Mohon and Riley Brown

Do you have any advice for anyone just starting out in barrel racing? Take your time, the speed will come and don’t over mount yourself

Do you think barrel racing should be limited to women only? No
