RAIN OR SHINE, ROCKY MOUNTAIN SUPER RACE SIZZLES!If it takes a barrel race to end a drought, so be it! Although the Colorado Springs skies were sunny most of the day on Saturday, August 30th, for the first day of the Rocky Mountain Super Race, the clouds rolled in that evening and down came the rain! Muddy conditions made it necessary to move the races to the Indoor Arena for the final two days. Even though the weather did not totally cooperate, entries were still up from last year’s numbers. The barrel race which was produced by TNT Events, attracted contestants from Colorado, Arizona, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Wyoming. They were all chompin’ at the bit to win some of the $40,000+ in cash and prizes that was awarded over the Labor Day Weekend. Stunning Bob Berg Buckles were awarded to the weekend average winners in each of the Open 4D divisions. TNT Events is proud to have Bob Berg Buckles as their official buckle maker. David and Windi Meek of the Rhinestone Ranch sponsored the 1D buckle. The 2D buckle was sponsored by the Lazy H Ranch. Manna Pro was the generous sponsor of the 3D buckle and Palmer Lake Motors had their name on the 4D buckle. Second place in the average received beautiful sterling silver pendants; custom designed and donated by Bob Berg himself! Third place in the average received gift certificates for new Wrangler jeans. First through third winners in the 1D were Janet Engel with a total time on three runs of 47.316, Debbie Beede and Roy Jo Sartin. Winners in the 2D were De Chapman with a total time on three of 48.832, Lorie Diodosio and Samantha Rice. The 3D champs were Jo Ann Jones with a total on three runs of 50.454, Diana Jenkins and Rylene Orebaugh. Taking home the gold in the 4D was Mark Wade with a total of 53.323, Deb Wade and Nathalie Bonnett. Daily awards were also given in the Open 4D and as always, random draw awards so everyone would be eligible for some of the dynamite prizes. Award donors included: Classic Equine, Manna Pro, Wrangler, Cowboy Magic, Jones Leather Mfg., Turn Magazine, International Horse Vets, John Ewing Company, ADM Alliance Nutrition and TNT Events. Contestants who had entered the Open 4D all three days were put into a random draw for a gorgeous trophy saddle donated by Rocky Mountain Saddles and Feed located in Fountain, Colorado. The lucky winner was Deb Christy of St. Francis, Kansas. When she was called to the announcers stand, she said that she was worried she’d done something wrong. Much to her surprise, TNT Events producer, Ty Rinaldo, informed her that she was the lucky winner of the trophy saddle. She got on the microphone and expressed her appreciation. She also told of how the day before, at Cowboy Church, they were talking about how instead of anticipating good, people always expect something negative when they get a phone call or are called to the entry office, etc. Now when her name is called, she will expect the best! She was overwhelmed with joy Over the three days, more than 1100 horses passed through the entry gate and the contestants were ready when called which helped keep the pace at 55 runs per hour. Competition was tough as ever and each day brought a new champion to the Open 4D winner’s circle. Cathi Hadley had the fast-time of the day on Saturday with a smokin’ 16.421 in the Outdoor Stadium. Janet Engel was a speedy 15.154 to win the Open 4D on Sunday in the Indoor Arena. Monday’s Open 4D Champion was Alicia Sandoval who turned in an awesome time of 15.118 in the Indoor Arena. However, it was Janet Engel that rode into the sunset with more winnings than anyone else - $1,572.60 for a weekend of fun! It was Janet’s 16 year old Quarter Horse gelding, BR Mahogany, or Jo as she likes to call him, that helped her take home the gold. She’s had Jo for eight years and admits that the first 1 ½ years were a nightmare. “If we finished a run and only had one knocked over barrel, that was a really good day,” says Janet. But, she stuck it out and now her name can be seen among the top competitors at any barrel race. She attributes Jo’s good health to the Manna Pro feeding program she uses. She adds, “he definitely has his quirks – he’s always into mischief, but I believe that in order for any equine athlete to survive and compete at a high level, they have to have some kind of funny or strange habit!” Growing-up, Janet was a downhill ski racer and did not start riding horses until her dad gave her one for her 14th birthday. She was very reluctant at first, but over time, she became hooked. Now she has the best of both worlds as she resides in Winter Park, Colorado, where she owns and operates the Winter Park Sports Shop and enjoys barrel racing as well as skiing. She is a long-time contender at the TNT barrel races and appreciates how the producers are always “adaptable” and willing to do whatever necessary to make everything right for the contestants. Janet is very grateful to the wonderful sponsors and awards donors who help make the races possible. With a total cash payout of $31,798.25, there were several competitors who took home nearly $1,000 and many more that were hot on their trail. All of this would not be possible without the tremendous support from our Sponsors. We are very grateful to Corona Light, Manna Pro, Justin Boot Company, Midnight Rose Hotel & Casino, Rhinestone Ranch and Wrangler for being our Platinum Sponsors. Gold Sponsors included Colorado General Corporation, Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau, Hitchin’ Post Trailer Sales, McKnight Trucking, New Generation Homes, Truck & Trailer Works and the Lazy H Ranch. WPRA sponsors were Capital Financial Resources Group, Whitney Electric and Monument Safeway. The dedication and hard work from our staff is priceless and we tip our hats to all of them. We especially want to thank all of the contestants and their faithful traveling partners who keep us employed!
