HIGH STAKES BARREL RACES A ROARING SUCCESS

The inaugural event for High Stakes Barrel Races (HSBR) was a success by everyone’s standards.

The $5,700-added Archean Energy 4D Classic, which was held at Silver Sage Community Corral in Brooks, Alberta, on November 15th, attracted over 200 entrants, including several CFR competitors. The event saw pay outs totaling $15,428.

Organizers Dawn Rude and Carol Louis were pleased with the turnout and the positive feedback received from competitors. Rude said, "It is a lot of hard work to put on a professional event, but it is worth it. The barrel racers appreciate it and are showing it." Louis added, "After 2 ½ months of planning and work, it went as smoothly as possible. We’re proud of everyone who helped make it a success. It was a team effort."

Karen Reding, the winner of the Open 1D and the hand-crafted log bed donated by Dream Works Log Homes and Lone Pine Log Works, pocketed $1,303 aboard a 9-year-old gelding she calls Doug. The Beiseker rider, who ran the pattern in 15.390 seconds, said, "I didn’t think I would win; I was just hoping to be in the top 5 in the 1D. The bed is cool; it’s nice to have a nice prize like that," adding, "I would like to thank Dawn and Carol for an excellent show. They did a great job."

Referring to the $15,000-added HSBR Spring Super Race in Brooks on April 18th, 2004, Reding promised, "I’ll be back…"

Annie Stoebe, who traveled from near Great Falls, Montana, was the top rider in the Youth ID aboard her 7-year-old mare, Ricky. She said, "I liked how the Youth and the Open were run together. The ground was good and the event was run really well - better than some of the big ones I go to at home."

In addition to her $513 for 4th place in the 1D, Monica Wilson won the membership draw for the Shania Twain concert tickets, to which she responded, "I never win anything!" She is producing 2 sanctioned HSBR events (May 7th and 8th) and hosting a major HSBR event (May 9th) in Cardston, because she believes that HSBR is "on the right track."

Sharon Fergusson, winner of the Senior division said, "I had fun. This is going to do barrel racing a lot of good. It was well run and it’s what we needed."

Alfred Gratrix of Nature’s Blend, one of several sponsors, agreed, stating, "I think this was a great way to start, and it’s going to get bigger."

Wild Horse Mountain Outfitters, who donated a weekend vacation package to the Youth champion as well as sponsoring the Youth 4D, are showing their commitment by producing a sanctioned event at Thorsby on December 6th.

Other sponsors included SciencePure Nutraceuticals, Cowboy Country Clothing and Tack, Ann Baker, Missing Link Vacuum Services, SeeMe Photography, Heritage Inn in Brooks (host hotel) and Eldon Weaselchild and the Bearclaw Band, who provided the live entertainment.
