Presidio, Texas – 10 adult horses and four yearlings seized by Border Patrol agents south of El Paso and tested in Presidio have tested positive for Equine Piroplasmosis (EP).

While common in Mexico and other countries, the blood borne disease that can be fatal to horses is not considered to be an epidemic in the United States.

It can lead to major constraints to interstate and international movements if left undetected, according to the Texas Animal Health Commission.

The USDA and TAHC is still investigating the source of these horses and the possible detention. Read more…
