Although the air was chilly, competitors turned in some smokin’ runs at the January 15 & 16 Blazin’ Barrels Winter Buckle Series produced by TNT Events. The First National Bank of Las Animas, La Junta and Monument was the Presenting Sponsor for the event, which took place in Colorado Springs. Dominating the Open 4D was Jessi Peek of Trinidad, Colorado. She and “Ryon’s Tiny Truckle” went to the winners circle on Saturday and were second only to Karen Turek and “Shootin’ Breeze” on Sunday. After the dust had settled, Jessi drove off with $565 for her efforts.

Daily awards were given 3 deep in each of the Open 4D Divisions and some random draw awards were given out as well. Kelli White and Toni Hardin each blazed a trail to Western Warehouse to redeem their random-draw gift certificate for a new pair of Justin Boots valued at $150!

Nicole McKnight of Pueblo, Colorado turned in the fast time of the entire weekend. She was a sizzlin’ 15.389 on “Trux” to win the Youth 4D on Sunday. Nicole remains in the lead for the Open 1D Bob Berg Buckle, with Roy Jo Sartin hot on her trail. Still ahead for the 2D buckle is Kathy Gannon with Gabrielle Larson just a few points behind. Shelby Frasier is hangin’ on to her lead for the 3D buckle and Robin Cole now leads the pack for the 4D buckle. Second place in each division at the end of the series will receive a Pro Rodeo Originals’ cowhide brief bag sponsored by Meek’s Rhinestone Ranch. Third place will trot home with a gift certificate from Wrangler Jeans. The heat is on and the points are close, so mark those calendars NOW for the remaining 2 races of the Blazin’ Barrels Winter Buckle Series – March 12 & 13! Then, it’ll be time to make ready for the 8th Annual Rocky Mountain Super Race, May 6, 7 & 8.

Presenting Sponsors for the Blazin’ Barrels series are Hitchin’ Post Trailer Sales, Rocky Mountain Barns, First National Bank of Las Animas, La Junta and Monument, The Midnight Rose Hotel and Casino and Meek’s Rhinestone Ranch. Gold Sponsors include www.PalmerLakeMotors.com and The Colorado Springs Convention and Visitors Bureau. Awards are being donated by Justin Boot Company, Classic Equine, Wrangler, Western Horseman Magazine, The Equine Touch, Cowboy Magic, Farnam and Pala Mountains. This came to me while chopping wood the other day. You've heard don't sweat the small stuff. I say save it for later and use it for kindling
