RENDON INDOOR ARENA

It is increasingly difficult to find anyone in the barrel racing/rodeo industry who doesn’t know a relative or friend who has faced breast cancer.  Thanks to research and early detection the survival rate is ever increasing.  Those that have had to endure the treatments know that fighting the disease is tough enough but then having to pay for those treatments can be financially challenging.  Shelley Wright is a trainer/barrel racer from Weatherford, Texas who thankfully is a survivor of breast cancer but is having a hard time financially surviving the resulting medical bills.  On July 7, 2001 Roy Goldsmith who owns Rendon Indoor Arena generously donated his facility to host a benefit barrel race.  He said he was happy to help barrel racers as they have been good to support his arena over the years.  Many friends and businesses donated some great items for a silent auction and many others donated their time and energy to make this all happen.  Despite the Texas heat over 100 people came and  raised close to $2,000 to help with Shelley’s medical bills.  Shelley says she is touched by everyone’s generosity.

From this benefit plans are underway for “Cowgirls against Breast Cancer” which will host an annual barrel racing event to benefit breast cancer.  Remember this could happen to anyone of us, young or old – don’t take chances – get an annual checkup.  Anyone wishing information may contact Mary Etta Rothrock at 940/626-4206 or email [email protected].
