Sugar, a 27-year-old Spanish Barb horse, has played a role in the education of almost all of the 2,109 doctor of veterinary medicine graduates from the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech during her 24 years on the job. AUSTIN, TX – On June 3, 2026, the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of a detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in Zavala County, Texas. A sample collected from a three-week-old calf with an umbilical lesion was identified and confirmed as NWS by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa.
