Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and Texas A&M AgriLife have worked together to develop a New World Screwworm (NWS) Certified Inspector Program. This is a first-of-its-kind training program designed to train and certify individuals on myiasis clinical identification, animal inspection, NWS treatment, and NWS movement requirements. To meet the requirements to issue NWS Treatment/Movement Certificates, you must complete the New World Screwworm Preparedness and Response Education course. After successfully completing all modules and knowledge checks in the course, participants must pass a final exam with 100% accuracy (3 attempts allowed) to earn a Certificate of Completion. Due to the recent detections of New World screwworm (NWS), the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) is encouraging veterinarians to educate their clients on the clinical signs of myiasis and available prevention and treatment products. Currently, pet owners transporting companion animals are able to do so without movement permits or health certificates out of infested zones. However, all large groups of companion animals being moved may be asked for further verification to ensure that the animals have been monitored for symptoms. AUSTIN, TX – On June 3, 2026, the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) received confirmation of a detection of New World screwworm (NWS) in Zavala County, Texas. A sample collected from a three-week-old calf with an umbilical lesion was identified and confirmed as NWS by the National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa.

The horse attended the 2025 WPRA World Finals and Elite Barrel Race event in Waco, Texas on November 5-9, 2025. TAHC staff are working closely with event coordinators, equine owners, and veterinarians to respond to the outbreak, take measures to protect equine, and prevent the further spread of the virus. AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Animal Health Commission received confirmation of vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) in a horse on a Shackelford County premises, on August 8, 2023. The National Veterinary Services Laboratory (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa confirmed the virus as the New Jersey serotype. This confirmation marks the second case of VSV in Texas this year.
