State regulators have proposed tightening oversight of large livestock facilities, a move environmentalists worry doesn’t go far enough while some farmers fear it goes too far. The changes could affect every livestock farmer in Illinois, but aren’t likely to have an impact on a controversial proposal for the largest dairy farm in the state, near Galena. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency recently outlined the proposed changes in response to a report by the U.S. EPA, which found that the state wasn’t adequately regulating concentrated animal feeding operations, or CAFOs. CHEYENNE, WYO. Tests have confirmed finding the bacterial disease brucellosis in a single cattle herd in northern Wyoming, but so far there is no indication that the disease has spread to surrounding herds in Park County, state Veterinarian Jim Logan said. “Everything else we have results on so far has been negative,” Logan said Wednesday. Logan said he doesn’t expect the state will lose its brucellosis-free status at this time. Losing the status would mean restrictions and expensive testing for Wyoming’s cattle industry to keep the disease from spreading. Read more…
