The horse showed signs of ataxia and other neurologic signs consistent with EHM when evaluated by a veterinarian. The premises is under movement restrictions and TAHC staff is working closely with the owner and veterinarian to monitor potentially exposed
AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program (USDA-CFTEP) released the Kleberg County Fever Tick Control Purpose Quarantine Area (CPQA) on January 26, 2018. The 17,397-acre CPQA was established by TAHC and USDA-CFTEP in December 2014 after cattle fever ticks were discovered on cattle located on a Kleberg County premises epidemiologically linked to a highly infested premises in Cameron County. AUSTIN, TX – The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) and The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Cattle Fever Tick Eradication Program (USDA-CFTEP) released the Jim Wells County Fever Tick Control Purpose Quarantine Area (CPQA) on November 22, 2017. The 51,590-acre CPQA was established by TAHC and USDA- CFTEP in July 2015 after cattle fever ticks were discovered on two calves at a South Texas livestock market. The calves originated from a premises located in Jim Wells County. An epidemiological investigation and follow-up inspection of the premises found additional cattle and wildlife to be infested with fever ticks. The

The Texas Animal Health Commission(TAHC) was notified by The United States Department of Agriculture(USDA) of the confirmed presence of New World screwworm in a stray dog that was found in Homestead, Florida. This is the first time screwworms have been found on Florida’s mainland in decades. The screwworm eradication program has been underway in Florida since October 2016. The USDA, Florida Department of Agriculture and partnering agencies will continue to modify the eradication program as needed in order to eradicate the New World screwworm. Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) confirmed Equine Herpes Myeloencephalopathy (EHM) in a mare at a breeding farm in Cooke County, Texas on May 24. The affected farm was placed under quarantine and restricted from moving animals and semen. Since the original confirmed EHM positive horse, six additional horses on the premises have tested positive for the neuropathogenic strain of EHV-1. One of the test positive horses exhibited neurologic signs consistent with EHM, bringing the total number of EHM cases at this facility to two. AUSTIN, TX – Dr. Dee Ellis, State Veterinarian and Executive Director of the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC), has announced that he will retire December 31, ending his more than 30 years of service to the state’s livestock and poultry health regulatory agency. Dr. Ellis first joined the TAHC as an Animal Health Inspector in 1977 while completing a bachelor degree in Animal Science. After obtaining his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Texas A&M University, Ellis returned to the agency in 1985 as a field veterinarian. AUSTIN – The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) has released the remaining portion of the fever tick temporary preventative quarantine area (TPQA) in Starr County (South Texas). The release was effective June 19, 2015.The area released is located in the southwest part of Starr County along Highway 83, near Zapata County. The TAHC established a TPQA for portions of Starr County on July 3, 2007 following findings of cattle fever tick infestations on multiple premises, and then increased the size of the area quarantined in 2008. Presidio, Texas – 10 adult horses and four yearlings seized by Border Patrol agents south of El Paso and tested in Presidio have tested positive for Equine Piroplasmosis (EP).
Contrary to what the name might imply, pigeons have nothing to do with transmission of the equine disease known as “pigeon fever”, which is also called Dryland Distemper. “Pigeon Fever” causes abscesses and swelling in the horse’s pectoral region (breast muscles) causing a “pigeon-like” appearance, and is caused by the bacteria Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis.
AUSTIN – The existing wildfire situations across the state of Texas have The Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) emergency responders currently working in Bastrop, Travis, Cass, and Waller counties.
