Pulmonary aneurysm killed Steeplechase winner, preliminary report finds

The pulmonary aneurysm that killed Iroquois Steeplechase winner Arcadius was unpreventable and impossible to detect in pre-race veterinary checks, equine experts said Monday.

Arcadius collapsed after winning the 71st running of the Iroquois on Saturday at Percy Warner Park. According to a preliminary necropsy released Monday, the horse’s pulmonary artery ruptured just above the heart.
