New World Screwworm Companion Animal Information for Veterinarians

Due to the recent detections of New World screwworm (NWS), the Texas Animal Health Commission (TAHC) is encouraging veterinarians to educate their clients on the clinical signs of myiasis and available prevention and treatment products.

Currently, pet owners transporting companion animals are able to do so without movement permits or health certificates out of infested zones. However, all large groups of companion animals being moved may be asked for further verification to ensure that the animals have been monitored for symptoms.

While Texas is not requiring movement documentation, the destination state may have additional requirements. Pet owners should continue to follow all other applicable local, state, and federal regulations. Pet owners can help protect their animals by taking proactive measures, including monitoring animals daily, reporting suspect cases to their local veterinarian, and discussing treatment options with their veterinarian.

REPORTING

Early detection and reporting are critical. Report all suspect NWS cases to TAHC immediately at the Veterinarian on Call line:

1-800-550-8242

You can also report suspect cases to your TAHC Region Office.

After observation, if NWS or myiasis is suspected, samples should be collected and submitted for official identification.

TREATMENT

Animals impacted with NWS myiasis should be treated immediately. Effective treatments may vary and should be evaluated using current recommendations for specific species and areas affected. Use the FDA webpage for specific information regarding approved products and uses of animal drugs for prevention and treatment. The current list of FDA-Authorized & Conditionally Approved Animal Drugs for New World Screwworm can be found here.
