Caution urged for certain people when handling dog food

South Florida animal lovers are double-checking their pantries and store shelves after a string of recalls involving pet food tainted with salmonella.

Salmonella, a food-borne illness that annually causes hundreds of human deaths nationwide, is one of several diseases that can be passed from pets to people. The bacteria can spread if the person is careless with cleanup during poop patrol, prepares the pet’s food in the same spot as family meals, or doesn’t keep pet food dishes clean, South Florida experts warn.
