Diamond Pet Foods, the company behind a massive recall of dry dog food due to Salmonella contamination that has sickened at least 16 people, was not taking “all reasonable precautions”

Although there have been no animal or human illnesses related to Apex Dog Food and the product has not tested positive for Salmonella, the company has voluntarily initiated this recall out of caution to ensure the health and safety of consumers and their pets.
Fourteen people have been sickened with Salmonella Infantis infections in a 9-state outbreak linked to dog food. At least five of the individuals have been hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Possible Salmonella contamination of dog food brought a recall Friday from a California company. Natural Balance Pet Foods Inc. recalled its Natural Balance Sweet Potato & Chicken Dry Dog Food with the “Best By” date of June 17, 2011, in 5-lb. and 28-lb. bags because of the potential it is contaminated with Salmonella. Ketamine hydrochloride is a rapid-acting, non-narcotic, nonbarbiturate agent for anesthesia in cats and for restraint in nonhuman primates. Teva initially issued a recall at the distributor level. On Dec. 21, 2009, the company expanded the recall to the veterinary level. Teva also makes ketamine products for other companies.
