The Blue Buffalo Company has announced a recall on one production run of its Spa Select Kitten dry food. The production code on the recalled product is: “Best Used By Mar. 07 08 B.” The company stated that the rice protein concentrate used for this production run was obtained from Wilbur-Ellis, the same company that supplied rice protein concentrate to Natural Balance. Test results received late April 18 indicated that the rice protein concentrate tested positive for melamine. For more information, see The Blue Buffalo Company press release (PDF) or the FDA press release at http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/bluebuffalo04_07.html.
Wilbur-Ellis Company is voluntarily recalling all lots of the rice protein concentrate the San Francisco company’s Feed Division has shipped to pet food manufacturers because of a risk that rice protein concentrate may have been contaminated by melamine. Wilbur-Ellis noted that it obtained rice protein from a single source in China and shipped to a total of five U.S. pet food manufacturers located in Utah, N.Y., Kansas and two in Missouri. For more information, see the press release on the FDA Web site at http://www.fda.gov/oc/po/firmrecalls/wilburellis04_07.html.
No one knows how many cats and dogs have fallen ill after eating the pet food subject to a massive recall. Many veterinarians are wondering whether this sort of problem is preventable as they struggle to respond to the situation. Menu Foods Inc., a Canadian manufacturer of wet pet food, recently recalled more than 60 million containers of cuts and gravy-style food from two U.S. facilities because of concerns about the effect of the products on the renal health of pets. The recall represents about 1 percent of pet food in the United States, according to the

SCHAUMBURG, Ill. — The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) urges its members who suspect they have treated animals affected by contaminated pet food to take part in a survey to help generate more information about the ongoing pet food recall. This survey is being undertaken through an agreement between the American Association of Veterinary Laboratory Diagnosticians (AAVLD) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). AAVLD will be gathering data on behalf of the FDA, and will use it to define what constitutes a confirmed case of food-induced kidney toxicity, identify common elements among the cases and then
One of the most common questions being directed to the Food and Drug Administration during the pet food recall has been about data on the number of cats and dogs that have died after ingesting products formulated with adulterated wheat gluten. But as Dr. Stephen F. Sundlof, director of the FDA Center for Veterinary Medicine, explained at an April 5 press conference, a prerequisite for estimating the deaths is defining what constitutes a confirmed case—referred to as a case definition. The criteria for defining a case did not yet exist at press time, but the American Association
