Health officials are urging residents and horse owners to take precautions against mosquito-borne diseases as cases increase across the state.
According to a report released today, 16 cases of Eastern equine encephalitis have been confirmed in Florida horses this year.
Of those, Osceola had three and there was one each in Polk, Volusia, Marion and Lake counties.
There are no human cases in Florida. But so-called sentinel chickens – animals used to measure the spread of mosquito-borne diseases in the environment – have tested positive for Eastern equine encephalitis in Central Florida.
