A hearing is set in Clarke County General District Court this morning to determine who will gain custody of eight horses seized from a property on Wycliffe Road after law enforcement and equine rescue officials investigated a report that they appeared to be starving.
The hearing is also to decide whether the horses were abandoned, treated cruelly, or deprived of adequate care, Commonwealth’s Attorney Suzanne “Suni” Perka said Monday.
Noting that the case is still being investigated, Perka said criminal charges could be filed once authorities determine who owns the horses and who was responsible for their care.
The horses, being nurtured back to health at an undisclosed location, were taken from the 3500 block of Wycliffe Road on Nov. 17. The rescue was undertaken after the U.S. Equine Rescue League, a national nonprofit group, received a tip through its Web site from a person concerned about their condition, said ERL field investigator Holly Tomlinson of Herndon.
