I have a 4 years old mare. I have your book and really enjoyed it. I have been riding horses for over 10 years. I have never done barrels and really would like to do barrels on my 4 years old mare. She has not been trained to do barrels. I have been looking for a trainer to train my mare to do barrels for me. Still no luck. I am wondering what age is too old to get a mare started on barrels? Since I read your book, I need your opinion if it is safe to train my mare on my own from what I learned in your book? Will it be the best to find someone experted instead?

Your mare’s age is just right for getting started in the barrel race – she is old enough that her bones are mature and strong and she should be mentally ready for any kind of training as long as she knows her basics – walk, trot, lope, stop at any speed, back up, side pass, stand quietly, etc. You should definitely start her training yourself and if you hit any bumps along the way, be sure and ask questions or seek help. It’s only as far away as your computer or telephone. By doing the training yourself, you increase your own experience and knowledge. And don’t be afraid of making mistakes – most horses are very forgiving as long as you are not abusing or hurting them. Good luck with your endeavor.
